I started racing in the mid 70s on a Honda SL100, which was eventually pushed to the limit with modifications. Then rode 125s for a couple of years, the 75 Husky 125 was my race bike at the time. I was away from motorcycles for many years until my kids were finally old enough to ride.
We were living in California at the time, which had a very active Vintage scene. I was lucky enough to have a co-worker with two Maicos and an MT Honda, which he would lend me every once in a while for vintage events.
Eventually after moving to Calgary, I made my way back into racing with my kids. I've had great fun at the AOTMX events I've been to, and we travelled around the province to go racing, but for the last few years we've stayed close to Calgary. I've gotten both my boys into vintage racing, and they really like the racing part, but there's a lot more wrenching that goes into vintage bikes, which isn't such a big thrill. You can tell when the vintage moto has just finished because you find spare parts along the track....
I'm really excited to see how well this Vintage MX will work out here, I always hoped there were a bunch of guys like me who enjoyed the old bikes.
When we started the local vintage classes in Calgary, I had high hopes, but the turnout has always been pretty meager.
I suspect having a venue all it's own will make a huge difference.
